Clay Pigeon Shooting Experience

Bisley at Braidwood is Scotland’s largest sporting clay shooting ground located on a stunning estate in the Scottish Borders just south of Edinburgh. The ground also has skeet, the country’s most versatile Pay & Play shoot and is home to Scotland’s first full-bore rifle pipe range.

Whether you’re a complete novice or a seasoned pro, everyone is welcome for individual, shared, group or private events. Bisley also hosts regular Young Shots and Ladies days, for kids and women respectively. The best part is no experience is necessary – anyone can come along.

Riddell Estate, which has its roots in the 12th century, is a working estate with organic farming, commercial woodland, field sports and other diversified enterprises. Riddell was home to the Riddell family for 700 years until it was purchased by the Sprots in 1823 whose direct descendants, the Grant family still run it.

Points of Interest

Riddell Estate has sheep, cattle and a variety of crops. One of its key attractions is Riddell Tower, also known as the General’s Tower, which is surrounded by beautiful woodland. Riddell, in its entirety is a species-rich, bio-diverse natural environment. It is a fertile homeland to roe-deer and many native birds such as woodpeckers and herons.

The Ale River runs through the heart of Riddell, which is home to Clerklands Fly Fishery. The estate lies a field away from Ian Stark Equestrian Centre and borders with Whitmuir Farm.

Countryside Holiday Accommodation

Riddell Estate has 3 accommodation options on the Estate, Riddell House which sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 luxury bedrooms. Bowismiln Cottage which sleeps up to six guests. The cottage has its own kennel and is surrounded by views of green fields and sheep, next to the Ale River and located down a quiet private track. Horse Riding in the Scottish Borders

Ian Stark Equestrian Centre offers horse riding lessons and expansive hacking and trekking in the Scottish Borders – taking over the reins from Dryden Riding Centre, which started 40 years ago with just six highland ponies. The equestrian facility now has around 40 horses and ponies and is busy with horse riding lessons and hacking 7 days a week. The centre is BHS approved and all instructors are first aid trained with full disclosures. There is also the opportunity to have lessons with Ian Stark on your own horse.

The centre is a Scottish forum for competitions and training in all equestrian disciplines. Further details can be found in the fixtures section of the website. The arena and facilities are available to hire to any organisation interested in running their own events. The café also serves delicious food and drinks during events.

Clerklands Fly Fishing

Trout Fishing in the Scottish Borders

Clerklands Fly Fishery is a beautiful loch in the Scottish Borders, which is around 4 acres in size and up to 25ft deep in places. It provides a tranquil place to fish for trout in Scotland and have a relaxing day. Set within the Riddell Estate, the Clerklands Fishery lies about 5 minutes’ drive from Selkirk and 10 minutes from Hawick. Travel time from Edinburgh is around 1 hour and from Newcastle, around 1.5 hours. The Fishery has a good number of Wild Brown trout for sporting purposes only and Rainbow and Blue trout are stocked regularly, up to double figures in size.

Self-Catering Holiday Cottage

If you don’t want to stray far from the fishing, Clerklands have a holiday cottage less than 200m from the lake. This single-storey house has two en-suite double bedrooms and underfloor heating. You can almost cast from your bedroom window!
